How Does Mindfulness Reduce Stress and Anxiety?
When learning to be mindful, we must accept that there are some things we cannot change. Therefore, we acknowledge that stress is a waste of energy as it does not change the future. External forces can impact our situations, but our minds dictate how we deal with each case. They are what make us feel emotions.
Learning to be mindful enables you to control your thoughts by accepting some things will not go as planned. There is nothing we can do about it. However, mindfulness is a way of becoming more open and forgiving to both ourselves and others. In short- when learning to be mindful, we can enjoy each moment and make the most out of every situation. As a result, we can become less anxious in general and reduce the amount of stress we experience.
How to Have a Positive Mind
We need to become more positive individuals and become more thankful when we are learning to be mindful. Besides, each moment, positive or negative, helps to shape who we are. We become better people because of them. Therefore, mindfulness enables us to become more grounded. Moreover, mindfulness makes us more resilient. By becoming more positive and adopting a more positive way of thinking, we can accept every situation, see the best in it and enjoy it.
How to be Mindful at Work
Initially, as you wake up in the morning, consider how your goal is learning to be mindful. Remind yourself of this goal throughout your day and try to act mindfully. You should be consciously present at work, and ensure you give your job your full attention. As a result, you will be happier, more productive and will achieve higher job satisfaction. After work, reflect on your day. Take note of what you have done that you are proud of. Consider how you practiced mindfulness that day.
On the other hand, think about what you could have done better. Learning to be mindful provides never-ending growth. It is a continuous process that can continually be improved upon. However, this learning is what makes us better people.
Mindfulness Breathing Exercises
Concentrating on our breathing is something that not many of us do. However, by not doing so, our breathing is often very shallow. Therefore, this is found to be a leading cause of stress and anxiety. Breathing exercises are an essential aspect of learning to be mindful. Namely, they teach us to take slow, deep breaths, which allow more oxygen to enter the lungs. As a result, we feel more relaxed, with our heart rate slowing down and blood pressure stabilizing. You can do most breathing exercises whenever you need them.
There are various mindfulness breathing examples; it is up to you which you use. For example:
- First, breathe in for 4 seconds
- Next, hold your breath for 4 seconds
- Following this, breath out for 4 seconds
- Finally, hold this for 4 seconds
- Repeat as many times as you feel necessary
When learning to be mindful, we should allocate some time to complete mindfulness breathing meditation. By completing these exercises, we begin reducing our fight or flight responses. Therefore, we can become happier and more relaxed almost instantly. Meditation should be enjoyable and comforting experience, relieving the body and mind. To begin meditation, close your eyes and slow your breathing down. Take long, deep breaths as you put aside your thoughts. If you become distracted, this is okay. Accept the idea you are having and bring your focus back to your breathing.
Mindfulness meditation for sleep
For many of us, a good night’s sleep is something that often doesn’t happen. However, a reason for this could be because of our phones, which keep your mind engaged. When learning to be mindful, we should put away our phones an hour before bed. This will allow us to relax and prepare for sleep.
Some mindfulness techniques which aid sleep are:
- Breathing exercises
- Mindfulness body scanning
- Reviewing your day
Like learning to be mindful, journaling teaches us to be present and focus on how we are feeling. There are a few different ways we can use mindfulness journaling, for example:
- Gratitude journaling- for this simple method, write down 5 things that you are grateful for each day. It does not matter if these are big or small, what matters is that they are important to you! This will allow you to have a greater appreciation of the things in your life that are good, making you feel happier.
- Doodling or colouring- many creative minds prefer this method as there is less pressure to put their feelings into words. Simply doodle how you feel and express yourself through these drawings.
Anyone can practise mindful journaling, as the only tools required are a pen and paper. Do what you feel is best as this is personal. It is all part of the process of learning to be mindful.
